Main Street Fort Dodge announces the Downtown Dumpster Mural Project

 

In the Spring of 2019, the City of Fort Dodge and Main Street were awarded a $10,000 Art Builds Community Grant provided by the Iowa Arts Council, a division of the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs.

 

Pick It Up, Fort Dodge! initiative was created and addresses unique and sustainable ways to manage refuse in the downtown – and we can do this by addressing the goal to not only clean up the downtown, but enhance the areas where garbage is, through art.

 

Our five-prong approach began last June with two painted dumpsters placed in the downtown. One of the goals of this Pick It Up, Fort Dodge initiative is to help decrease litter in downtown Fort Dodge through creative problem-solving efforts. Main Street Fort Dodge is looking for area organizations interested in volunteering their time to paint murals on dumpsters. Main Street Fort Dodge will provide a primed dumpster, paint, and supplies. Now is the time to start planning your idea for a painted dumpster.

 

The organization requesting to paint will be responsible for creating an original design that adheres to the Dumpster Mural Design Parameters in the Dumpster Mural Program Application. The organization will also be responsible for coordinating its volunteers to complete the mural in a timely fashion once all details have been confirmed by Main Street Fort Dodge. All designs submitted are subject to review/approval by the Pick It Up, Fort Dodge Committee.

 

Dumpster Mural Design Parameters: Design must be an original design; no signage/logo of the organization shall be incorporated into the design of the mural—however, a small area on only one dumpster side may recognize the artist/organization's name; there shall be no inappropriate language or imagery incorporated into the design; design must adhere to the general Pick It Up,

Fort Dodge theme; design must avoid sanitation company’s logo area on front and other safety sticker areas.

 

Requests will be prioritized based on the date a request was received. The number of dumpsters painted will be based on availability of dumpsters and supplies. If your organization is interested in painting a dumpster, please submit this completed request to Kris Patrick, Main Street Fort Dodge Executive Director, at kris@mainstreetfd.org or drop it off at the Main Street Fort Dodge office at 24 North 9th Street.
